British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
