Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no comment on this. The governance of the team stays unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
